Eyebrow Tattoo Aftercare

5 min readUpdated 30 July 2026

After eyebrow tattooing, keep the area clean and dry, avoid water, sweat, makeup and skincare on the brows for the first 7 to 10 days, and do not pick or scratch as they flake. Brows look darker and sharper for the first week, then lighten considerably as they heal. Final colour is not visible until around 4 to 6 weeks.

Healing, day by day

  • Days 1 to 3: brows look dark, bold and sharply defined. This is normal and not the final result.
  • Days 4 to 7: flaking begins. Pigment appears to lift away with the flakes.
  • Days 8 to 14: brows often look patchy or unexpectedly light. This stage worries people the most and it resolves.
  • Weeks 3 to 4: colour resurfaces and evens out as the skin settles.
  • Weeks 4 to 6: true healed colour is visible. This is when the follow-up appointment is scheduled.

The week 2 dip is the single most common reason clients panic. It is a normal part of healing, not a failed treatment.

What to avoid while healing

  • Getting the brows wet, including long showers, swimming and steam.
  • Sweating heavily, so avoid the gym and hot yoga.
  • Makeup, skincare or SPF directly on the brow area.
  • Picking, scratching or peeling the flakes, which pulls pigment out unevenly.
  • Direct sun exposure and sunbeds.
  • Exfoliating acids and retinoids near the brow area.

Why the follow-up matters

Skin retains pigment differently between individuals. The first appointment establishes shape and colour, and the follow-up assesses how yours actually held and refines it.

Nearly all cosmetic tattooing needs this second session. Judging the result before it happens is judging an unfinished treatment.

Common questions

Why do my brows look so dark at first?+

Pigment sits in the upper layers of the skin immediately after treatment and appears darker and sharper. As the skin heals and the surface renews, it softens considerably. Expect roughly a 30 to 50 per cent lightening.

What if my brows look patchy after flaking?+

This is extremely common around days 8 to 14 and usually resolves as colour resurfaces over weeks 3 and 4. Any genuine unevenness is addressed at the follow-up appointment.

When can I wear makeup again?+

Keep makeup off the brow area for the full initial healing period, typically 7 to 10 days. Makeup elsewhere on the face is fine as long as you avoid the brows.
