Laser Hair Removal Aftercare

4 min readUpdated 30 July 2026

After laser hair removal, avoid heat, sun, saunas, hot showers and vigorous exercise for 24 to 48 hours, apply SPF daily to treated areas, and do not wax, pluck or thread between sessions. Shaving between appointments is fine and encouraged. Mild redness around the follicles for a few hours is normal.

The first 48 hours

  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, spas and steam rooms.
  • Skip vigorous exercise, as heat and sweat can irritate treated skin.
  • Keep the area clean and avoid heavily fragranced products.
  • Apply a cool compress if the area feels warm.
  • Use SPF on any treated area that will see daylight.

Why hair still appears afterwards

Treated hairs do not vanish at the appointment. Over the following 1 to 3 weeks they work their way out of the follicle and shed, which can look like the hair is still growing.

This shedding is expected and is a sign the treatment did what it should. Do not pluck or wax it out, because that removes the follicle the next session needs to target. Shave it if it bothers you.

Between sessions

  • Shaving: fine, and recommended before your next appointment.
  • Waxing, plucking, threading, epilating: avoid entirely, as these defeat the treatment.
  • Sun exposure and fake tan: avoid, as both affect suitability and safety at your next session.
  • Exfoliating acids and retinoids on the area: pause for a few days either side of treatment.

Common questions

Is redness normal after treatment?+

Mild redness and small bumps around the follicles are common and usually settle within a few hours. Persistent redness, blistering or significant swelling should be reported to the clinic.

Can I shave between sessions?+

Yes. Shaving is the recommended method between appointments because it leaves the follicle intact for the next treatment.
