Skin Firmness, Collagen and Ageing

Jowls: What Causes Them and What Helps

6 min readUpdated 30 July 2026

Jowls form when skin along the jawline loses firmness and facial fat pads descend, blurring the line between the jaw and the neck. They are driven by collagen and elastin loss, fat pad descent and bone remodelling, not by weight alone. Non-surgical options include radiofrequency skin tightening, radiofrequency microneedling and minimally invasive contouring.

The 3 things happening at once

  • Skin: collagen and elastin decline, so skin no longer holds its shape along the jaw.
  • Fat: the fat pads that sit high in a younger face descend, gathering along the jawline.
  • Bone: the jaw and midface remodel subtly with age, reducing the underlying support.

This is why skincare alone cannot fix jowls. Topical products work on the skin, which is only one of the 3 contributors.

Non-surgical options and what each addresses

  • Radiofrequency skin tightening (XERF): supports firmness gradually with no downtime. Best for early, mild laxity.
  • Radiofrequency microneedling (Morpheus8): works at depth to support remodelling along the lower face and jawline. Some recovery time.
  • Minimally invasive contouring (FaceTite, AccuTite): delivers energy beneath the skin for more significant change, with genuine downtime of 1 to 2 weeks.

What non-surgical treatment cannot do

Energy-based treatments support and firm. They cannot reproduce what surgery achieves, and for significant laxity a surgical opinion may be the more honest answer.

A good consultation includes being told when your goals sit beyond what a treatment can reasonably deliver. That conversation is more useful than a course of treatment that was never going to meet your expectations.

Common questions

At what age do jowls start?+

There is no set age. Early softening along the jawline is often noticed from the late 30s or 40s, though genetics, sun exposure, smoking and weight changes all shift the timeline considerably.

Do facial exercises help?+

There is little evidence that facial exercises meaningfully improve jowls, because the primary drivers are skin laxity, fat descent and bone change rather than muscle tone.

How long do results last?+

Results vary with age, lifestyle and skin condition, and ageing continues regardless. Maintenance treatments are commonly recommended to support the result over time.

All treatments require an individual consultation and suitability assessment. Results vary between individuals. Information on this website is provided for general information purposes only and does not constitute medical advice.
