RF Microneedling vs Microneedling

5 min readUpdated 30 July 2026

Standard microneedling creates micro-channels mechanically, prompting a healing response mostly in the upper skin layers. RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy released from the needle tips into the dermis, producing a thermal effect at depth as well. That makes RF microneedling more effective for laxity and deeper scarring, with more downtime.

The core difference

Both create controlled micro-injuries that trigger the skin’s repair response. The difference is what happens once the needles are in.

In standard microneedling, that is the whole mechanism. In RF microneedling, energy is then released from the needle tips into the dermis, adding a controlled thermal effect at a depth the surface never experiences. The skin surface is largely bypassed, which is part of why it suits a broad range of skin tones.

When each makes sense

  • Standard microneedling: overall skin quality, mild texture, product absorption. Gentler, less downtime, often used as maintenance.
  • RF microneedling: acne scarring, more established texture, skin laxity, pore visibility. More significant response, more recovery.

Practical differences

  • Downtime: standard microneedling is typically 1 to 2 days of redness. RF microneedling is often 2 to 3 days, sometimes with a grid-like texture.
  • Comfort: both use topical numbing. RF adds a sensation of heat.
  • Course: both are delivered as a series, commonly 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.
  • Timeline: RF results develop over months as remodelling continues.

Common questions

Is RF microneedling always better?+

No. It is more powerful, which is not the same as more appropriate. For someone wanting gentle maintenance with minimal downtime, standard microneedling may suit better. The right choice depends on the concern and your recovery tolerance.

Is RF microneedling safe for darker skin tones?+

Radiofrequency does not rely on targeting pigment, so it can generally be considered across a broad range of skin tones. Suitability is still assessed individually at consultation.
